Work For Gawker Tech, Improve Our Lives [Announcements]

Love reading Gizmodo? Have more than a little tech ability? Looking for a job? This is the post for you.

We’re looking for a new Office IT person for Gawker tech (in New York). Think you have the right skills? Here’s what we need, besides you living in the NYC area:

• Know how to fix both PCs and Macs
• Know how to install software on both PCs and Macs (this should be easy if you passed that first one)
• Be able to diagnose PC and Mac issues
• Knowledge of basic networking, Unix/Linux
• Willing to work with hardware as well as software
• Willing to do heavy lifting (I don’t imagine that you’re going to be forced to give piggyback rides, so think more like moving equipment around)
• Will be mostly doing desktop/laptop support, basic networking in the office with occasional trips to the data center to assist
This is a part-time position

If you think this is the job to you, email techjobs@gawker.com with the subject “Office IT”. It’s a nice place to work, which can’t really be expressed in bullet point form. You do get to hang out with people from Giz and the other Gawker sites on a daily basis, so add that to your “plus” column if you really want to see Frucci every day.

Firefox Mobile “Fennec” Now Open to All Brave WinMo Alpha Testers [Browsers]

Good news if you’re a Windows Mobile user and were feeling left out the Mozilla’s Fennec mobile browser party. Today’s Alpha 2 release should now work with most devices using the Windows Mobile 6 platform. (Support had initially been limited to the HTC Touch Pro and some other “VGA phones”.)

Newly added treats include updated themes and a tweaked UI, improved add-on support and numerous bug fixes. We gave the alpha a quick spin and found that while a bit slow, it shows plenty of promise. The interface and overall experience is actually pretty usable, and it renders pages beautifully.

A corresponding Maemo release for Nokia’s N810 has also been made available. If you want to know what all the fuss is about (or you’re one of those add-on writing folks we love so much), then you can experiment with the desktop versions for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Pirate Bay’s Censor-Free YouTube Sails into Beta Extreme [The Pirate Bay]

Well, this should make the Pirate Bay’s court appeal interesting. For the last couple of years, the guys have been working on an anything-goes, censor-free haven for online video sharing called VideoBay, and it’s now gone into “Beta Extreme.”

“This will be an experimental playground and as such, subjected to both live and drunk (en)coding, so please don’t bug us too much if the site ain’t working properly,” the site’s front page currently warns.

But before you head over looking for an all you can eat smorgasbord of porn, know that you’re currently limited to viewing the ogg/theora video and audio tag demos linked to from the main page.

TorrentFreak notes that users were initially able to browse through the videos, but that’s been disabled now. “What is left is an announcement that the site will be launched somewhere in the future.”

Beyond the piracy angle, what’s interesting is this could be one of the first major deployments of HTML5, the next major revision of HTML that some believe could replace the need for plug-ins like Adobe Flash. For that reason, you’ll need to use a browser that can handle HTML5’s video and audio tags, such as: Firefox 3.5 beta 4, Opera 9.52 preview, Google Chrome 3, Safari 3.4/Safari 4.
